February 2018 General Meeting Minutes

MINDEN & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
GENERAL (POTLUCK) MEETING AT THE MINDEN CATHOLIC CHURCH
HELD ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2018 AT 12:00 P.M. NOON

Present: President Karen Shirley introduced the head table which included Sharon Ireland, Vice President, Mary Jane Irwin, Treasurer, Shirley Loveland from District 4 and Elinor Kernohan, Secretary.

Potluck: Everyone enjoyed the delicious potluck luncheon contributions which were arranged beautifully and presented on tables organized by Sandria Garry and her committee.

Speaker: Jean Tyler from Waverly Farms spoke on the importance of Bio-dynamics in farming and gardening. It is a very basic process but also very complex. Specific plants will heal the earth and as the soil in our county is not good, even stones serve a purpose. All types of plants, stones, etc. give back to the earth. She spoke about companion planting and admitted that even she had trouble growing carrots. It seems that nobody is sure how it works, but she knows it does. She recommended to plant by the moon, enjoying your plants and relationships to bring joy. It is amazing the amount of food that grows from one seed. She encouraged everyone to use the cosmic and solar energy to one’s advantage.

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the minutes of the October 2nd, 2017 general meeting be adopted as circulated. CARRIED.

Financial Report: Moved by Mary Jane Irwin Seconded by: Rose Paliwoda
BE IT RESOLVED THAT the financial report be adopted as read – Operating Bank Balance of $3,553.24 and a GIC in the amount of approximately $2,109.00. CARRIED.

Society Business: Shirley was present to inaugurate three members of the executive to the society who were not present in November when the official swearing in was completed. However, those members were not in attendance today, so that part of the meeting was unable to be completed.

OHA, Dist. 4, etc:

The Peterborough Garden show will be held on April 13 to 15, 2018 and President Karen Shirley had advance tickets for sale.

The District 4 fall seminar will be hosted by Norland and Coboconk at the Royal Canadian Legion, County Rd. 48 on October 28, 2018.

Table Favours: On each table was a selection of small potted plants and those at each table whose birthday was the closest to today were to choose a plant to take home.

Adjourn: The meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
