POT LUCK LUNCHEON & GENERAL MEETING

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2015

 

TIME:                    12:00 Noon

LOCATION:         Minden United Church

CHAIR:                 President, Mary Jane Irwin

ATTENDANCE: There were 38 in attendance.

 

Mary Jane Irwin welcomed everyone and introduced the head table & the guest speaker, Murray Lincoln, Misty Hollow Carving. After grace, given by Bob MacBrien, and after the pot luck lunch, Nick Case introduced Murray who spoke on ‘Recycle & Reuse Your Life’. Nick thanked him and remarked on his inspiration and practical advice regarding fairies fitting into this year’s flower show theme, ‘Enchanted Gardens’.

 

MINUTES:           Moved by Pauline Plooard on behalf of Margaret Giles, Seconded by Sandria Garry

“That the minutes of the October 2014 General Meeting be adopted as circulated”. Liz Case put forth an amendment that the Guest Speaker was the Master Gardeners Pruning Station Rotation Presentation. The amended minutes were

FINANCIAL REPORT: The balance in the operating account at January 31, 2015 is $2,302.79 and the GIC is $2,149.25.

COMMITTEE & EVENTS REPORTS

Community Gardens – Karen Shirley needs 20+ Canna tubers (red blooms & green leaves) for the barrels. Members please start them soon. It was suggested that Margaret Hewings may have some.

Flower Show – Margaret Giles assured us that the Flower Show Booklet will be ready for the March meeting. ‘Enchanted Gardens’ is the theme. Karen Sloan will be giving a presentation & there will be demonstrations & workshops at the show.

Membership – Sue Sisson & Betty Mark made the first membership sales for 2015.

T-Shirts & Well Wishes Cards & Pins – Elinor Kernohan reported that 10 cards were sent since the last meeting in November. Pins were available. No clothing order at this time.

Village Green – Liz will have a Sign Up sheet available at the March meeting – asking people to help occasionally with the Village Green Garden from about May to October.

Bulb Sale Fund Raiser – Barbara Messner had forms ready for members to order Spring bulbs ($7 per pkg with 50 cents to our Society) May 31 deadline for orders for fall delivery.

Bee House Fund Raiser – Bee houses (for Mason bees) were available for $20 or 2/$35.

2015 Yearbook – Richard Hevesi & Anne Brown were thanked. It was ready & given to all 2015 members.

OHA, DISTRICT 4 & OTHER MEETINGS

District 4 Assistant Directors – sent their regrets that inclement weather prevented their attending.

  • Rose Odell requests helpers at the Peterborough Garden Show to man the District 4 table on April 3 & 4.

Canada Blooms – March 13-22 at the Direct Energy Centre

Trillium – The winter edition is available at www.gardenontario.org

Southern Ontario Orchid Show – Feb. 14 & 15 at the Toronto Botanical Gardens

 

OTHER BUSINESS

Pot Luck Luncheon – Thanks were relayed to the organizers: Sandria Garry, Rose Paliwoda, Elinor Kernohan & Anica Sabel.

Attendance & Door Prize: There were 38 in attendance. The potted Spring flowers on the tables were taken home by those at each table whose birthday was closest to Feb. 7. One set was presented to Murray’s wife, Alida, and another sent home to Susan Sheehan who could not attend at the last minute due to illness.

Next Meeting – at 1:00 pm at Minden Community Centre on Tuesday March 3, 2015
