MINDEN & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
GENERAL MEETING
TUESDAY OCTOBER 6th 2015  

 

MASTER GARDENER: Heather Chambers provided information on different varieties of Hydrangea

GUEST SPEAKER:   Steve Bacon of Four Season Sprouts in Port Stanley provided information on the health benefits of sprouts and how to grow them.

CALL TO ORDER: The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:45pm

FINANCIAL REPORT: Karen reported that our bank balance at September 31st is $1753.12.

COMMITTEE REPORTS & EVENTS

COMMUNITY GARDENS –Clean-up day for down town is Friday October 16th from 10:00am to noon. All members were asked to turn out to help and to bring garden tools, gloves, brooms etc. Karen will collect the canna lily bulbs.

The Community Gardens Committee will meet to plan 2016 gardens on Wednesday October 21st at 1:00pm at Karen’s (1023 Pixie Lane).

 

FLOWER SHOW – The Flower Show Committee met on September 21st at Margaret Giles’ to plan 2016 show and enjoy a pot luck lunch. Next year the show will be Aug 12 & 13 and the theme will be “Carnival of Colour. The Community Centre is also booked for 2017, on Aug 11 & 12. More entries must be encouraged in “Photography” and “Pressed & Dried” categories. Since the demonstrations were well received, this feature will continue in 2016.

 

LIBRARY & BULLETIN BOARD – Izabel Janca reported that the books have been resorted and since the cabinet is full, some have been removed to be stored in a box. Books may be taken out for a month or for the whole winter since we don’t meet in December or January Members are simply asked to sign the book and give date and phone number.

 

T-SHIRTS & CARDS & PINS – Elinor Kernohan reported that a card was sent to Bob MacBrien for his 90th birthday and one society pin was sold. All shirts and hoodies have been paid for and picked up. Another order can be placed in the spring if there is a demand.

 

NOMINATING COMMITTEE – Liz and Anica will be phoning members to seek nominations for executive, director and committee chairperson positions. Please consider running for one of these positions.

 

VOLUNTEER HOURS – Linda Kemp reminded members to fill in the Volunteer Hours Chart in the Year Book and not to sell yourselves short. The sheets are to be turned in to her at the November Meeting.

 

OHA, DISTRICT & OTHER MEETINGS

DISTRICT 4 FALL SEMINAR – Is being held in Campbellford on October24th. Let Mary Jane know by Monday October 12th if you wish to attend. Car pools will be set up.

 

CORRESPONDENCE

OHA Judging Committee – Providing a copy of their September Newsletter – “Show Table”

 

Norland Horticultural Society – A press release – They have received one of the 140 Friendship Tulip Gardens awarded across Canada by Vesey Bulbs. Everyone is invited to attend the planting Oct 28th at 11:00am at the old school.

 

 

OTHER BUSINESS

Spring Bulb Sale – Barbara Messner reported that the bulb order has arrived and those who have not received their order should take it tonight. She thanked those who took part in the fund raiser.

 

Lily Bulbs – Rose Paliwoda brought boxes of lily bulbs which Linda Pentney donated to be shared by society members. Thanks to Rose for helping dig the bulbs and transporting them. A thank you card will be sent to Linda.

 

Thanksgiving Workshop – Lorraine Turcotte is holding a workshop on thanksgiving table arrangements on Oct 7th at 5:00pm. The cost is $45.00
