COMMITTEE REPORTS & EVENTS
ADVERTISING & PROMOTIONS – Persons should continue to post meeting flyers sent out by Nancy in locations assigned previously. If anyone does not have a printer please see Melanie Hevesi.
COMMUNITY GARDENS – Karen Shirley circulated a list for volunteers to sign up at various locations to plant the town on Tuesday June 9. Black rotary planters are being re-located. Wear your blue shirt & bring gardening tools at 10 am.
EXCURSIONS – Pauline Plooard on behalf of Susan Sheehan again requested members volunteer their gardens for a members’ garden tour this summer. Glen Springer & the camera club will come & photograph your flowers.
The Nursery Tour is Thursday June 18th to Blossom Hill, Anna’s Perennials, Griffins Green Houses & Horlings Garden Center. Cost will be $20 tax & gratuity included at Winston’s Inn plus something for your driver. A sign-up sheet was circulated. 6 spaces left & a waiting list. Car drivers please indicate your location & the number of spaces you have. People can sign up to drivers.
FLOWER SHOW – Margaret Giles invited anyone interested to attend the next flower show meeting. A Design Workshop is going to be held on Saturday July 18 from 9:30 am to 3 pm at the Cultural Centre Common Room. Pat Campbell will lead in a parallel and water viewing design which are in this year’s flower show. Cost is $15. Bring your own lunch. Coffee supplied. 12 spaces. Reminder that 10% off at garden centres listed in our yearbook is on live plants only and you must show your membership card.
HYLAND CREST TEA – Anne Brown, Elaine Smith, Barbara Messner and Rose Paliwoda will serve the tea on May 21st
LIBRARY & BULLETIN BOARD – Izabel Janca showed the book we have on photography in the garden
MEMBERSHIP – Sue Sisson reported that our membership is now at 82
PLANT SALE – Rose Paliwoda requested everyone pot up plants for the sale and label them. Bring them to the Village Green on May 23 by 9:00am; the sale starts at 10:00 am. Volunteers are asked to wear their blue shirts.
T-SHIRTS & CARDS & PINS – Elinor Kernohan reported that 4 cards were sent last month. There are 2 persons interested in ordering t-shirts or hoodies. She is offering our society pins for sale at each meeting.
VILLAGE GREEN – Liz Case will arrange care when Township delivers new topsoil.
YEARBOOK – Linda Kemp reminded members the Volunteer Hours can be written in on page 14 whenever they occur for collection by her in November.
YOUTH PROGRAM – Rose Paliwoda thanked Members for rhubarb roots (particularly Gwen Turner) and flavoured mint plants brought in for the children to plant. The program will begin next Tuesday.
OHA, DISTRICT & OTHER MEETINGS
District 4 AGM – Mary Jane Irwin reported the new executive is: Director-Dianne Westlake, Assistant Directors-Carol Mitchell, Dennis Miluck & Pam Chellew, Secretary-Bev Silk, Treasurer-Lesley Hollick. Dawn Tack spoke on the latest plant introductions, and Dianne Westlake demonstrated making a living wreath.
District 4 Awards Celebration – June 10 in Peterborough, speaker on Native Grasses
OHA Convention –is July 3-5 in Ancaster. All forms and information are on the gardenontario website. Early bird registration is $125 and must be in by June 1st. A townhouse that sleeps eight has been reserved and at present there is one vacancy. Mary Jane urged members to attend because the convention is always fun and informative. Our society will subsidize at least part of the registration fee.
EXECUTIVE MEETING – Mary Jane reported on the highlights of the April Executive Meeting of the society. Motions were passed to charge $15 for the design workshop; and to purchase one butterfly at a cost of $30 for the SIRCH fundraiser. It was agreed that we try to dedicate the memorial trees during Garden Ontario Week – June 13th to 23rd.

Sirch – is releasing Painted Lady butterflies as a fund raiser on June 14 at the Cultural Centre. Margaret Giles will oversee the release of the butterfly purchased by our society for $30 donation.
Ontario Ministry of Citizenship – calling for nominations for ‘Medal for Good Citizen’
OMAFRA – announced new Ag & Rural Economic Development Advisor, Heather Candler
District 4 Malcolm Geast – has discovered evidence of earliest horticultural society in District 4 – Grafton in 1820s.
OTHER BUSINESS
Spring Bulb Sale – Barbara Messner outlined the bulbs for sale for $7 per package & it is on our website. Our society will earn 50 cents per bag. This is the last chance to order and bulbs will be delivered for planting this Fall.
Dedication Ceremony – for ivory silk lilacs to be June 13-21 during Garden Ontario week if the plaques ar ready.
Bee Houses –that are left will be offered for sale at the Plant Sale.
Awards – Since some members were absent for the official presentation of 2014 Service Pins last November, Mary Jane presented Isabelle Heaven, Jane & Hugh Newman & Jessie Geall with their 10 year pins tonight.
Hosting District 4 meeting in 2016 – Our Society members should consider hosting either the AGM on April 12 or the Fall Seminar on Oct. 22 0r 29. MJ will check on the availability of the MH Community Centre. If a Chairperson steps forward then a committee will fall into place quickly.
Sunflower Competition –It was agreed that in this Year of the Sunflower members would plant them in their gardens & Rose Paliwoda would judge the tallest sunflower and the largest head sunflower.
Door Prize – Irene Alexander won secateurs.
