MASTER GARDENER: Janice Hardy provided information on Attracting Pollinators to your Garden

CALL TO ORDER: The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:45 pm and welcomed all.

ATTENDANCE: There were 39 in attendance tonight.
PINS: Mary Jane presented Ruth & Bob MacBrien with their 10 year pins.
MINUTES: The minutes were posted & also read by Pauline Plooard.

COMMITTEE REPORTS & EVENTS
COMMUNITY GARDENS –Anne Brown informed us that this year our objective was to obtain the best quality for the best price for the varieties we wanted so plants were purchased from various local garden centres and not by a tendering procedure. She outlined Planting Day procedure. Nancy Garbutt has almost filled in the maintenance schedule. The person(s) who plant a barrel or garden or planter are responsible for its maintenance throughout the summer.
EXCURSIONS – Susan Sheehan checked that all persons attending the tour of Peterborough area garden centres on Thursday June 18 knew their carpool arrangement. Leave Minden at 9 a.m. Take a bottle of water & a snack as lunch is at 1 p.m. $15 taxes & tip included. Please pay Susan in the morning. Bring money for paying the carpool driver and Anna’s Perennials does not take debit or credit. If you intend to buy numbers of plants bring a carrying tray for the trunk.
Susan confirmed the 7 gardens for our Members’ Gardens Tour on Saturday July 25.
FLOWER SHOW – Margaret Giles demonstrated ideas for decorations for the show. She asked that every member make something that might be seen in an enchanted garden, to be turned in by July 7th our next meeting. Also if members have enchanted garden items such as gnomes, to loan indicate that so they can be labelled for return. If anyone has grass carpeting it is needed. Refreshments will be cupcakes in paper cups and methods of icing them will be shown next meeting. At the show Karen Sloan will be demonstrating how to make a Fairy Garden on Friday night and Sue King will do 2 demos on Saturday.
WORKSHOP – a signup sheet was circulated for the Water Viewing & Parallel Design workshop that Pat Campbell will run on Saturday July 18. Cost is $15; 12 participants can be accommodated & waiting list.
HYLAND CREST TEA – Anne Brown, Elaine Smith, Barbara Messner and Rose Paliwoda served tea, sandwiches, cheese & crackers & fruit to the residents on May 21st. A good time was had by all.
LIBRARY & BULLETIN BOARD – Izabel Janca indicated one book on Cacti and several large books which contain chapters on water wise gardening.
MEMBERSHIP – Nancy reported that our membership is now at 89.
PLANT SALE – Rose Paliwoda thanked many members for their plants & help at the 20 minute sale. $574 was realized. Photographs are on the side table.
T-SHIRTS & CARDS & PINS – Elinor Kernohan reported cards sent & noted suggestions for future cards. There are 2 persons ordering t-shirts or hoodies and she needs more for an order. Our Society pins are still available for $5.
VILLAGE GREEN – Liz Case thanked members who spent 2 mornings weeding & pruning. She reported that the dead juniper is gone. Donated Hostas will be put under the birch tree. Some rearrangement of plants will be done. The weekly maintenance roster for care of the gardens during the summer is underway.
WEBSITE – Rich had no new information.
YOUTH PROGRAM – Rose Paliwoda said the children planted the 3 Sisters Garden, sunflowers, dill, rhubarb roots, herbs, and flavoured mints. They constructed bee houses, learned about worms & cleaned up and planted nasturtium seeds in the school garden. Next week they walk to Home Hardware to pick out their free geranium and re-pot it the following week.
OHA, DISTRICT & OTHER MEETINGS
MDHS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE – Mary Jane reported:
- $200 would be given to each member attending the OHA Convention in Ancaster on July 3-5. The townhouse for 8 is filled but more persons are welcome to attend the convention.
- We will not host any District 4 meetings in the coming year.
- Mary Jane Irwin & Karen Shirley will attend a Minden Hills Council meeting to discuss the $750 cap put on free use of community facilities by volunteer groups.
District 4 Awards Celebration –June 10, Peterborough, special awards to be presented. Barb Ballantyne and Sue Sisson will be awarded 25 year pins. Doug Kennedy to speak on Native Grasses. Fee paid for by society. If you wish to join in please let Mary Jane know tonight.
OHA Convention – Is July 3,4 & 5 in Ancaster and members were invited to register.
MINDEN HILLS TOWNSHIP COUNCIL MEETING – Mary Jane & Karen Shirley attended Minden Hills Council Meeting on May 28th 2015 and explained the history of our relationship with the township to new council members & new staff members. As a consequence an exception will be made for our Society to the $750 cap on free use of township facilities.
