October 2017 General Meeting Minutes

MINDEN & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
GENERAL MEETING
TUESDAY OCTOBER 2, 2017

 SPEAKER: Hazel & Joel Cook came from just outside of Peterborough to talk about peonies and delphineums. At their home and gardens named Blossom Hill, they grow over 600 varieties of peony!

MASTER GARDENER: Carolyn Langdon came to speak to us about forest gardening or permaculture. The master gardeners are holding an event on Friday November 17 from 1-4 pm at the Silver Beach Developments Community Clubhouse. Followed by a potluck social. She also informed us about the local seed library, and asked that as we clean up the community garden, we keep an eye out for saving certain seeds.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Francis reports a balance of $3971.80 Our books have gone to be reviewed, and will be returned to us before next month for the November general meeting.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

COMMUNITY GARDENS—Anne Brown (via Karen): asks that members come to help clean up on October 10th.

GARDEN SHOW—MJ: theme for 2018 is “Christmas in August”. A change has been made to the prize money: a monetary prize will be given for best in section, best in show, and high points.

LIBRARY AND BULLITIN BOARD—Isabel: The library has been updated, and Nancy has been sent the PDF book list: it will be being sent out to members within the month.

T-SHIRTS, CARDS, PINS—Elinor: a new order for tshirts and hoodies has been started, a clip board is being passed around. No cards have been sent since our last meeting.

VILLAGE GREEN—Liz: Thanks everyone very much for working so hard on the garden this year.

NOVEMBER ELECTIONS—Karen: please step up and participate in the board!

FALL SEMINAR: October 28 in Lindsay, open to all members. Speaker is going to be B4 Gardening: Beautiful Blooms for Birds and Bees

VOLUNTEER HOURS: Please hand these in at the November meeting.

MEMBERSHIP: Nancy: we now have 104 adult members, including 2 life members, and 12 youth members.

YOUTH GARDEN: Looks Beautiful!
