February 2016 General Meeting Minutes

MINDEN & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
POT LUCK LUNCHEON & GENERAL MEETING
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2016

TIME:                           12:00 Noon
LOCATION:                Minden United Church
CHAIR:                        President, Mary Jane Irwin
ATTENDANCE:         There were 46 in attendance with 6 new memberships.

Mary Jane Irwin welcomed everyone and introduced the head table & the guest speakers, Roger Clements and his wife Cindy Clements. Grace was given by Frances Thivierge, and after the pot luck lunch, Cynthia Gilmore introduced Roger who spoke on the history of tea. Cindy and Roger have a family owned speciality tea shop called, “The Old Curiosity Tea Shop in Markham, On. The tea room provides an authentic Victorian dining experience complete with English Fair and a wide variety of teas. For more information visit www.cuppa.ca. Liz Case thanked our speakers for volunteering to come and speak to us about their vast knowledge of teas.

CALL TO ORDER:         The Chair called the meeting to order at 1:50 p.m.

MINUTES:                   Moved by Michelle Lewis “that the minutes of the October 2015 General Meeting be adopted as circulated”. Seconded by Margaret Giles. CARRIED

FINANCIAL REPORT: The balance in the operating account as of February 6, 2016 is $2,305.69. No activity in December, 2015 or January, 2016.

Moved by Frances Thivierge, seconded by Elizabeth Carol “That the financial report be accepted as read” CARRIED

COMMITTEE REPORTS & EVENTS

 

COMMUNITY GARDENS– Karen Shirley reported the Township has taken steps to co-ordinate the hanging baskets around town with our colour scheme. The committee has asked the Township if we are going to have more bridge boxes this year. Also noted, was one of the river gardens is in need of repair. Karen will continue to update us with the progress concerning these matters.

EXCURSIONS- Susan Sheehan is looking for people that would be interested in showing their gardens this summer as part of the garden tour.  Susan is planning another excursion this year and will keep us updated.

FLOWER SHOW– Margaret Giles asked members to consider planters to be used as decorations in the flower show and to please name the plants. Part of the Horticultural Mission Statement is to educate the public about plants by holding these exhibitions.

MEMBERSHIP– Nancy Garbutt reported there were 46 members present with 6 being new memberships.

PLANT SALE– Rose Lea Paliwoda asked us to keep some of our extra plants for the plant sale.

T-SHIRTS & CARDS & PINS– Elinor Kernohan reported that a list will circulate at the next General Meeting for any members interested in purchasing hoodies and tee shirts. Member’s pins can always be purchased at meetings.

VILLIAGE GREEN– Liz Case will speak about the Village Green at our next General Meeting. Liz did indicate help is needed maintaining the Village Green from May to October.

YEARBOOK- A huge thank you to Rich Hevesi and Anne Brown for an exceptionally, outstanding job on layout and printing of our 2016 yearbook.

YOUTH PROGRAM- Rose Paliwoda, Pat Johnson, and Pauline Plooard will be working together to co-ordinate the Youth Program for 2016.

OHA, DISTRICT & OTHER MEETINGS

All Horticultural members are encouraged to attend OHA events. The Horticultural Society pays the registration for members. Horticultural members need to arrange their own transportation to the events.

District 4 Spring Get Together- March 12, 2016, Presidents & Executives Spring Get Together, Held at the Auburn Bible Chapel, Peterborough, On.

District 4 Annual General Meeting- Will be held on April 2, 2016. AGM co-hosts are Ennismore/Omemee, and the location is Ennismore.

District 4 Awards Celebration– The awards Celebration on June 15, 2016 will be held at the Naval Club, Peterborough, On.

OHA Convention– July 29-31, 2016, is the OHA Convention and it will be held at the Crowne Plaza, Kitchener, On (District 19).

District 4 Fall Seminar- The Fall Seminar will be October 29, 2016 in Bobcaygeon, On.

CORRESPONDENCE

Canadian Master Gardeners – Invitation to annual conference April 8-10 at Deerhurst

Karen Sloan from the Wall Flower Studio- will hold the following workshops: February 26, 2016 how to make a terrarium, March 6, 2016, painting, March 20, 2016 how to make Fairy Furniture.

 

OTHER BUSINESS

Awards– Nancy Garbutt received a 20 year membership pin and Rose Lea Paliwoda was awarded the Horticultural Service Certificate. Congratulations to both of these active members.

Door Prize– All of the lovely spring centre pieces at the pot luck lunch were given to the 6 new members of the Horticultural Society.

ADJOURNMENT- Moved by Sandra Gary that “the meeting be adjourned”. Time- 2:20 p.m.
