MINDEN & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
GENERAL MEETING

TUESDAY JUNE 3, 2014

 

TIME:                    7:00 pm
LOCATION:         Minden Community Centre
CHAIR:                 President, Mary Jane Irwin
ATTENDANCE: There were 43 in attendance. We now have 86 paid members plus 4 Juniors.   The door prize was won by Elaine Smith.

MASTER GARDENER: Sue Flinders-Adams spoke to the group about “Using Insects to Control Insects in the Garden

GUEST SPEAKER: Bogy von Bogen gave a very informative presentation about “Propagating Roses

A refreshment break was taken before the business meeting was called to order.

 

OPENING REMARKS:
For the benefit of new members specifically, Mary Jane Irwin mentioned that the members donate squares, cookies, etc. for the Refreshment table. If you are unable to donate some baking, a $1.00 donation can be put in the basket to help purchase the beverages. The Raffle Table is also by donation from our members. Your “junk” may be someone else’s “treasure”, so please feel free to contribute. MJ reminded all members of our commitment to the Community. We need all members to help out for example – Decorating the Town, plant sales, upcoming Flower Show. Please sign up wherever possible.

COMMITTEE & EVENTS REPORTS

Advertising & Promotions – Melanie Hevesi will produce flyers for the Flower Show & monthly meetings.

Community Gardens – Karen Shirley asked all members to help on Planting Day, Monday June 9th, 10 am. Bring gloves, hat, tools, brooms, watering cans and wear your “Blues”.

Excursions – Susan Sheehan asked if members would be interested in a member’s garden tour for members only on Saturday July 12. Mary Jane Irwin, Izabel Janka, Melanie Hevesi, Susan Sheehan, Inga March volunteered. It was suggested that the Master Gardeners should also be invited. Wed. June 18 is the tour to L.M. Montgomery house in Leaskdale. Lunch is $25.00. We will also be visiting Richters Herbs, a 2 acre perennial garden and John’s Garden Centre. Car Pool will be leaving at 9 am.

Hyland Crest Tea – Anne Brown and her committee of Marg Graham and Barb Messner served afternoon tea and home baking to the residents on May 22.

Flower Show – Margaret Giles reported on the Committee meeting of May 5th. The two judges are in place. Nancy is accepting donations for the prize table. Instrumental background music is needed to highlight our theme. If anyone can help or suggest a musician, please let us know. A Crescent & Movement design workshop is being planned. Please sign the sheet and you will be contacted as more information is available. We hope to increase the attendance at the show this year. Everyone can help by telling friends, neighbours, email contact list, etc. Sandria Garry is in charge of the Tea Room. We will be serving Berry pies and whipped cream. 40 pies are needed. Please sign up to volunteer kitchen/serving help and pies. Karen Shirley is in charge of the general volunteers and sign-up sheets will be at the July General meeting. To clarify who is expected to pay admission to the Flower Show – Everyone pays except show committee members, volunteers on the day they are working, and Hyland Crest residents. Lists of volunteers will be given to the front desk people by Karen and Sandria.

Library – Izabel Janka highlighted the books that complimented the speaker on Roses. We have had a lot of new donations, so an updated list will be forthcoming.

Membership – Nancy Garbutt reminded members to fill in the yellow information sheets so we can establish when members first joined our society as the society is now presenting 10 & 25 year service pins.

Plant Sale –Rose Paliwoda thanked all the volunteers for their help. The sale made $818.00 and more is coming in.

T-Shirts & Well Wishes Cards – Elinor Kernohan sent a card to John Sellers on his retirement from OHA. There is one Large T-shirt & one XL Hoodie for sale. Society Pins have been ordered and will be on sale to members only at the July General Meeting for $5.00 each.

Youth Program – Rose Paliwoda reported that for the fourteenth year she and her committee are working with the grade three students at Archie Stouffer School. The activities include planting and maintaining the Three Sisters garden at the Museum, a trip to Home Hardware for Geraniums for Father’s Day and the study of worms.

OHA, DISTRICT 4 & OTHER MEETINGS

District 4 Awards Celebration – June 11th in Peterborough. Mary Jane Irwin & Rose Paliwoda will attend.

OHA Convention – July 18 – 20 in Cornwall. Mary Jane Irwin & Rose Paliwoda will attend. Other interested members please speak to MJ.

District 4 Fall Seminar – is October 25th in Lakefield

May Executive Meeting – The President reported on resolutions passed at the May executive meeting. Society pins will be sold to the members at $5.00 each. We are purchasing 3 Ivory Silk Lilac Trees ( 2 memorial trees plus 1 sponsored by District 4). They will be planted near the kitchen door of the Minden Community Centre. Garden Planner

OTHER BUSINESS

Village Green update – Liz Case reported that a large number of perennials are being purchased using the $500.00 grant from the OHA. The township had $500.00 worth of topsoil delivered and township staff and Horticultural Society volunteers spread it on the Village Green gardens. There was enough to do all the beds except the small one closest to the parking lot. Sandria Garry, Barb Millington JoAnne McKinnon, Pat Johnson, and Mary Jane Irwin will meet at the Village Green on Friday June 6 to assist Liz Case in the planting of the perennials. Volunteers are still needed to maintain the Village Green.
